PhD Srdjan Darmanović

He was born in 1961, in Cetinje, Montenegro. He graduated from Faculty of Political Science, International Relations Department, in 1985 at University of Belgrade. In 1994, he obtained a Master of Arts degree at the same University, with thesis “Contemporary Liberal Theories on the Break of Real-Socialism”. He finished his PhD studies in 2002 at Faculty of Law, University of Montenegro, with thesis named “Democratic Transitions and Consolidations in Southern and Eastern Europe”.

From 2003 to 2006, he was Head of Political Science Department at Faculty of Law, University of Montenegro. In the same year, he became Dean of the newly formed Faculty of Political Science, University of Montenegro and has been exercising that function until 2010. From 2010 till present, he is engaged as Associate Professor at several subjects.

During his career, professor Darmanović has had various functions. He was founder and president of Centre for Democracy and Human Rights CEDEM, member of the lower house of the FRY Federal Parliament (1992 – 1996), vice-president of the Socialist-democratic Party of Montenegro (1993 – 1996), president of the Council of Montenegrin Diplomatic Academy (2006 – 2010) and national coordinator of Montenegro in the UN Alliance of Civilizations (2008 – 2010). From 2005 till now, he has been member of the Venice Commission.

He published books “Malformed Democracy” (1993) and “Real-Socialism: Anatomy of Collapse” (1996). He co-authored several books and published numerous articles in international magazines, such as Journal of Democracy (Washington DC, USA), East-European Constitutional Review (Budapest, New York) and Südost Europa (Munich, Germany).

Professor Darmanović is currently ambassador of the Republic of Montenegro to the United States.
